Dracula. One of the first well known Vamps to hit popular culture! He was inspired by Vlad the Impaler a real military strong head who rules with an iron fist during a time of constant attacks. Vlad would impale his victims and even eat dinner while watching them die. However, there's no evidence to suggest he drank blood. Dracula was inspired by Vlad who was nicknamed Dracula meaning "The Dragon".

However, the Dracula story has many aspects that did and didn't continue on in vampire culture. For instance, Stroker was the first to suggest vampires sleeping in a coffin and in his book Dracula was not hurt by sunlight. 1 2 3

Nosferatu was the first film adaptation of Dracula- though an unofficial one! In order to avoid being sued for copyright the ending was changed so that Orlok dies when exposed to the sun. Previously in folk lore Vampires were not bothered by the sun or needed to sleep in coffins! Nosferatu has become an iconic image of a vampire and many popular vampire series adopt his facial features and body language when portraying vampires. 3 4
