11 years may be itA few days ago I hit 11 years on deviantART. Due to some circumstances in my life I may be storing some art from this account, or bringing the account to a total close. I haven't decided yet, it depends on the outcome of some big things and when I know I'll tell you, and it'll make sense. For now, you can see more of my mermaid stuff on https://www.facebook.com/pages/Raina-the-Halifax-Mermaid/183327321702019 and on my page :iconrainamermaid: I may just change the name on this account and use it strictly for nudes/my photography. I derno! Point being the mermaid stuff at the very least will start being moved (most of it is already on the other account anyway)
thanks for all the support for 11 years. Pretty trippy!
Too much junkI've been here over a decade, and I was always a pretty active user. But I find myself using the site less and less because I just can't stand getting through the insane amount of junk on here. Screen caps, art theft, sexualized minors, memes etc. Report it, and nothing ever happens, and when it does it's 6 months to a year later. It's disgusting. Yep, I get there's a LOT of content on DA but I get tired of that excuse. If you're going to be an art site, be a damn art site. :/
I closed my stock account. And I mainly use my mermaid account now, just so I can redirect people to the websites where I am more active.
I just feel like DA has become too junky for my time or any effort :/ it's too bad. I really used to feel like the site was on the forefront but it's faded away.
Join me on reddit + closing my stockHey folks! I am doing an Ask me Anything on reddit !! So if you'd like to ask this mer a question, please post on the thread. You can join if you don't have an account very easily. http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/1pscl3/iama_professional_mermaid_ama/

Being a Mermaid Keeps me busyHey folks, I know I rarely update anymore... and I apologize. I'm so thankful for all your support... but I am so busy being a professional mermaid. It's really been crazy, and if you don't already follow me on facebook, please do so. (click for link!)

It's been a busy year, and if you didn't know already I published a book. You can see some info at www.makemeamermaid.com and if you feel so inclined as to buy it, use coupon code FAST5 for 5% off (even ebook!) However I am no longer doing signed copies That was limited and the site needs to be updated. Book 2 is around the corner, it'll be based more specifically on my experiences this past year with lovely photos, less of a "how-to".
We also published a calendar for the purpose of rai

2000 watchers + a Decade on DAI did not realize I have 2000 watchers. Nor did I realize I passed my DA Birthday, and I've now been here for A DECADE. Holy. Crap. I was a blissfully ignorant teenager 10 years ago. I still remember the summer a friend showed me DA. So many crazy things have happened since then. Like, my mermaid world for instance. I just passed 4000 fans on my FB page. Please give me a like there if you haven't already: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Raina-the-Halifax-Mermaid/183327321702019
I'm not really sure what else to say. I still do a lot of photos, but their more personal and not something I think the majority of the internet would enjoy to see. I have learned a lot about underwater photography. I may do 1 nude shoot this year, I derno, I weigh like 40lbs more than I did 10 years ago haha it's a little harder to get up the nerve you know? I don't draw anymore, my hands tremor too badly. I play guitar once in a while. I really just spend all my time on my mermaid company. It's like I finally f

Want more commissions? This journal is for artists who want to get more commissions, or want to open commissions and never had so they don't know how best to present their art, or even for those artists who took commissions before but would appreciate some more tips
There are a few pretty important things to consider before publicly announcing you're opening commissions:
1. payment method. The deviantart commission widget takes 20% of your profit, but then again more deviants have points so you're likely to get 20% more customers like that. But don't forget there are people who have paypal and don't feel like dealing with points so if you decide to open commissions through deviantart, don't let that be the ONLY payment method.
Paypal is the most common payment method used online and i strongly recommend it. Make a paypal account, connect it to a card and you're ready. But don't forget paypal has a limit of $3000 per year withdrawal. So if you're serious about drawing art for a living and you

Inspiration: youtube artists (part 1)Dear, deviantart fellow artists
Hi - so I'm starting new series of journals with useful resources - mainly because I'm running out of topics to write about and I just like some diversity. (I'll continue to post general art/motivational journals too every now and then)
Here are some of my favorite youtube artists, that inspire me and I hope that these resources might be helpful for you too.
'Level up!' is an idea of two Polish artists - Wojtek Fus ( WojciechFus ) and Darek Zabrocki ( daRoz ), who want to teach and learn from each other. Level Up has expanded a host team by amazing Jonas De Ro (JonasDeRo ) There are weekly, 2 to 3-hours long livestreams with critiques, overpaintings and Q&A's. It's so wonderful to watch them paint and talks about important tips on art and life as an artists. Also check out their
The Illuminated World ContestStock & Resources
Imagine a world where the soft glow of the magnolia blossoms illuminates the sidewalk. The reaching branches of the tree cast their light over the street, reflected in the gathering puddles of a spring rain. A garden nearby is a riot of colors against the deep shadows of the night. The harsh artificial street lights that we know today are gone. What would your world look like? Is it a world where the need for fossil fuel has been eliminated, or have the scientists bio-engineered the earth into a beautiful apocalypse?
The idea of bio-luminescent plant illumination is a real project in progress by three scientists in San Francisco, California. These scientists are engineering marine bio-luminous bacterial DNA into plants to make them glow. You can read more about their project here: Glowing Plants: Street Lig
DYNAMIC AND ACTIVE POSING FOR STOCKStock & Resources
Broadly defined, Action Stock is any photo-reference in which the subject is doing SOMETHING. That 'something' does not need to be extreme or particularly kinetic, it just has to show the effects of various forces on the bodies (or other objects) in the image. Perusing an artifact, sitting on someone's knee, even enjoying the aroma of a cup of coffee are great examples of actions that, when explored as stock images, can be of great value to artists.
Of course, there is nothing wrong with extreme, kinetic, over-the-top actions, either...
~ ~ ~
It's worth stating the obvious: if you are interested in exploring the more "kinetic" end of the action spectrum, know your limits. Don't work beyond your skill level and observe all necessary safety precautions; no shot is worth getting hurt over.

ReflectionsVal's pursuit led him to the foul beast's domain. The hollowed-out cavern reeked of blood and rancid meat. The dim light he had seen as he charged through the tunnel after the monster could now be identified: torches. Rows of mysteriously lit torches lined the walls of the huge cave. At its center was a substantially large labyrinth of mirrors.
He spotted the beast entering.
He spun his silver broadsword in his hand and hurried in behind it.
His garb was a simple blue and white crusader's leather with thick armored pads and reinforcing steel studs. Lightweight and flexible, but quite effective defense against blunt blows and – in a pinch – the slashing claws of the unholy spawn of the earth. All monster-hunters wore a similar variety in Val's experience. It would serve him well in these close quarters of the mirrored maze.
Right, left, forward, left, right he turned, always catching a glimpse of the beast's tail as he wove his way through the corridors. Every so often he sp
